Plants

Bamboo itself is a true grass, a member of the same family as lawn turf and wheat, which makes the plants on this list a genuinely strange category: things that resemble a grass so specifically that they get called “bamboo” even when they aren’t bamboo at all. Some of them really are grasses, just not … Read more

Bermudagrass has a genuinely simple tactile test that settles its most common case of mistaken identity faster than any visual comparison could. Run a blade of grass against your hand: bermuda is soft and gives way easily, while zoysia, its closest look-alike, is stiff and wiry from a naturally higher silica content and actually stands … Read more

St. Augustine grass has one feature that makes it easier to identify than almost any other turf species: a distinctly blunt, rounded leaf tip on a wide blade, roughly 5 to 8 millimeters across, where nearly every other common lawn grass tapers to a sharp point instead. That single detail rules out bermudagrass and zoysiagrass … Read more

A grass earns a genuine hair-like look from a fairly narrow combination of traits: blades thin enough to catch and move with the slightest breeze, enough flexibility to arch and cascade rather than stand stiffly upright, and often a naturally curling or wavy habit that only reinforces the resemblance. Mexican feather grass is probably the … Read more

True crabgrass, the genus Digitaria, has a genuinely specific look once you know what to check: a rolled, rounded stem, coarse lime-green leaves, and a fingerlike seed head where each branch emerges from the stem separately, spaced roughly an eighth to a quarter inch apart rather than clustered at a single point. That last detail … Read more

Fast growth in a grass is genuinely a double-edged trait, and it’s worth understanding both edges before picking a species based on speed alone. The same aggressive spreading habit that fills in a bare lawn patch within weeks, or stabilizes an eroding slope before the next hard rain, is often exactly what turns a plant … Read more

No grass actually grows anywhere, and it’s worth saying that plainly before recommending a single species. A grass built to survive a Florida summer will die in a Minnesota winter, and a grass bred for the Great Plains’ dry, open prairie will rot in a consistently soggy, shaded backyard. “Grows anywhere” is really shorthand for … Read more

Those dead, straw-colored circles that show up in a dog owner’s lawn every spring aren’t caused by disease or poor mowing, they’re caused by nitrogen and, according to more recent research, lactic acid concentrated in a small, repeated urination spot. The damage has a distinctive look: a dead patch 3 to 6 inches across ringed … Read more

Athletic fields live under a genuinely different set of pressures than a single-sport stadium. A high school or municipal park complex often hosts soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, and football on the exact same rectangle of turf across a single season, and each sport wears the grass down in a different pattern. Soccer and lacrosse spread … Read more

A football field asks more of its grass than almost any other application, including golf courses and ordinary sports fields used for less punishing games. Cleats tear at the surface on nearly every play, the same 20-yard stretch between the hash marks takes the heaviest pounding of the entire field, and a stadium field needs … Read more
