Weigela is a deciduous shrub widely appreciated for its graceful form and abundant springtime blossoms. It typically grows with arching branches that create a soft, fountain-like shape, making it a popular choice for borders, hedges, and standalone focal points in gardens.
The plant is best known for its clusters of tubular, trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom along the stems. These blossoms often appear in late spring to early summer and may continue sporadically afterward. Their vibrant colors and nectar-rich structure attract pollinators, adding movement and life to outdoor spaces.
Its foliage also contributes to its appeal, with leaves ranging from fresh green to deeper tones, sometimes with hints of bronze or variegation. The dense leaf coverage provides a lush backdrop that enhances the visual impact of the flowers throughout the growing season.
Weigela thrives in well-drained soil and prefers full sun for optimal blooming, though it can tolerate partial shade. It is generally considered low-maintenance, requiring only occasional pruning to shape the plant and remove old wood, which helps encourage more vigorous flowering.
This shrub is relatively hardy and adaptable, making it suitable for a variety of climates. Once established, it can tolerate short periods of drought, although consistent watering during dry spells helps maintain healthy growth and prolonged flowering.
In landscaping, weigela is valued for its versatility and long-lasting beauty. Whether used in mixed borders, as a flowering hedge, or as a standalone specimen, it provides seasonal color, structure, and ecological benefits.

Types of Weigela Bushes And Varieties
Wine & Roses (Alexandra)
This is arguably the variety that sparked the modern obsession with dark-foliaged Weigela. It features deep burgundy-purple leaves that provide a dramatic backdrop for its vibrant, rosy-pink flowers in late spring. It typically reaches 4–5 feet in height and is highly attractive to hummingbirds.
Midnight Wine
A dwarf version of the dark-foliaged classics, ‘Midnight Wine’ reaches only about 1.5 to 2 feet in height. It forms a tidy, low mound of dark metallic-purple leaves. While it does produce pink flowers, it is primarily grown for its foliage, making it an excellent choice for the front of a border or as a groundcover substitute.
Spilled Wine
This variety offers the same dark purple foliage as ‘Wine & Roses’ but with a unique, spreading growth habit. It grows wider than it is tall, making it perfect for tucking under taller shrubs or spilling over retaining walls. Its hot pink flowers appear in abundance during the spring and contrast sharply with the dark leaves.
My Monet
‘My Monet’ is a dwarf, variegated variety that is often mistaken for a small hosta when not in bloom. Its leaves are green with a thick, creamy-white margin that often takes on a pink tint in cooler weather. It produces soft pink flowers and stays very compact, rarely exceeding 18 inches in height.
My Monet Purple Effect
Building on the success of the original ‘My Monet’, this variety adds a layer of purple tones to the variegation. The leaves feature white and green margins with an overlay of purple-pink hues. It is more heat-tolerant than the original and provides a more consistent “glow” in the garden throughout the summer.
Sonic Bloom Red
This is a standout in the reblooming category. ‘Sonic Bloom Red’ produces a massive wave of lipstick-red flowers in May, followed by waves of blooms throughout the summer until the first frost. Unlike older varieties that fade, the red color remains intense even in the heat of July and August.
Sonic Bloom Pink
Part of the same remontant series, this variety features hot pink flowers that emerge in late spring and repeat their bloom cycle through autumn. It has a fast growth rate and a tidy, upright habit, making it an excellent choice for a flowering hedge that stays colorful for months rather than weeks.
Sonic Bloom Pearl
‘Sonic Bloom Pearl’ offers a fascinating color transition; the flowers open white with a yellow throat and gradually mature to a soft pink. Because the plant reblooms, you often have white and pink flowers on the same branch simultaneously. It provides a softer, more romantic look than the more vibrant red and pink versions.
Variegata
A classic landscape staple, this variety features bright green leaves with buttery yellow-to-cream margins. It produces a profusion of pale pink flowers in late spring. It is a vigorous grower that can reach 6 feet in height, making it a reliable choice for screening or as a large background shrub.
Red Prince
Known for having the “truest” red flowers of the older cultivars, ‘Red Prince’ is a non-fading variety that holds its color exceptionally well in the sun. It has a secondary bloom in late summer, though it is not as prolific as the modern ‘Sonic Bloom’ series. It features clean, green foliage and an upright, arching habit.
Minuet
‘Minuet’ is a dwarf variety noted for its purple-tinged green foliage and its slightly fragrant, lilac-pink flowers with yellow throats. It is exceptionally hardy and maintains a dense, rounded shape without the need for frequent pruning, making it ideal for low-maintenance landscapes in cooler climates.
Bristol Ruby
This is a large, old-fashioned variety that is prized for its vigorous growth and dark red, ruby-like flowers. It can reach heights of 6–8 feet and has a classic arching form. While it doesn’t have the dark foliage of modern hybrids, its sheer volume of spring flowers is difficult to beat.
Polka
‘Polka’ is a compact variety that produces very large, thick-petaled flowers that are clear pink with a yellow eye. It is noted for its exceptional hardiness and its thick, leathery green leaves that stand up well to wind and heat. It bridges the gap between dwarf and full-sized varieties, reaching about 3–4 feet.
Tango
This variety offers a beautiful “bronze” look, with leaves that are green but heavily overlaid with purple and brown tones. It produces bright red-pink flowers that pop against the muted foliage. It is a smaller-to-medium grower that stays around 2–3 feet tall, perfect for adding texture to a mixed bed.
French Lace
‘French Lace’ features striking variegated foliage with lime-green centers and bright yellow edges. What makes it unique is that it produces deep red flowers, which is a rare combination for a variegated Weigela. The contrast between the bright leaves and dark flowers is one of the most vivid in the genus.
Fine Wine
A more “refined” version of ‘Wine & Roses’, ‘Fine Wine’ stays smaller and has a tighter, more upright growth habit. The leaves are smaller and the burgundy color is slightly more intense. It is designed for gardeners who want the dark foliage effect but have limited space or want to avoid a “shaggy” look.
Ghost
Named for its foliage which starts out a pale chartreuse and matures to a “ghostly” iridescent yellow-green in the summer, this variety is a light-reflector in the garden. Its flowers are deep red, providing a startling contrast to the pale leaves. It is a medium-sized shrub that glows in the evening light.
Sunny Side Up
This variety is unique for its “fried egg” appearance. It produces white flowers with a prominent, bright yellow center. The foliage is a clean, apple-green. It is a compact, rounded shrub that offers a fresh, bright look that is quite different from the typical pinks and reds of the Weigela family.
Tuxedo
‘Tuxedo’ is the ultimate in high-contrast gardening. It features some of the darkest purple-black foliage available, paired with stark white flowers. This “black and white” aesthetic is very modern and makes a bold statement in a contemporary landscape design. It is a mid-sized grower with a slightly spreading habit.
Czechmark Trilogy
This is a multi-colored marvel that produces white, pink, and red flowers all on the same plant at the same time. As the flowers age, they shift colors, creating a “tri-color” effect across the entire bush. It is a very prolific bloomer with bright green foliage and a vigorous, upright habit.
Maroon Swoon
‘Maroon Swoon’ features exceptionally deep red, bell-shaped flowers and very dark green, glossy foliage. The flowers have a higher petal count and a more substantial feel than many other red varieties. It is a medium-sized shrub that provides a very rich, luxurious color palette for the late spring garden.
Date Night ‘Stunner’
Part of the Date Night series, ‘Stunner’ lives up to its name with incredibly vivid pink flowers and dark, chocolate-purple foliage. It is noted for its improved branching and its ability to hold its dark leaf color even in the high heat of summer, which can sometimes cause other dark varieties to “green out.”
Magical Fantasy
This variety is grown primarily for its spectacular foliage, which features wide, creamy-white margins on a green base. Unlike some other variegated types, the white stays pure white throughout the season. It produces soft pink flowers, but the foliage is the main attraction from spring until the leaves drop in autumn.
Carnaval (Courtalor)
‘Carnaval’ is another multi-colored variety, but with a different palette than the Trilogy. It produces a mix of white, clear pink, and deep rose flowers. The blooms are very large and almost completely cover the foliage at the peak of spring. It is a medium-sized grower that provides a festive, “confetti” look to the garden.
