The genus name Stewartia honors John Stuart, a Scottish botanist and patron of botany. The spelling “Stewartia” arose from a historical transcription error and eventually became the accepted spelling.

The principal drawback is patience. This is not a tree that should be planted with the expectation of rapid growth. It also needs consistent moisture, good drainage, organically rich soil, and protection from extreme heat or drought.
